Songkran: A Nationwide Water Fight

The following day I was happy to meet my friends Dad. We have been friends for about 10 years but this was my first time meeting his Dad because he has lived in Thailand for about 15 years. Dad hipped me to a couple of must have Thai phrases then took us to the local market to have a look around. He insisted I buy a Traditional Songkran shirt saying that it was the only way to REALLY celebrate Songkran, I passed. I didn’t learn how serious he was until the next day, EVERYONE had a Songkran shirt but me 🙁
Lesson learned, when Dad of friend has a suggestion, go with it!
Songkran is a celebration of the transition of seasons, rainy to dry. While a lot of people will call it the Thai New Year that really is not true. Hence the water and lots of it. Walking down any street in Thailand during Songkran and you are surely to get wet and have powder rubbed on your cheeks and forehead. Some of the powder is just plain baby powder, some of it has mint in it though which is really refreshing on a hot day.
Men, Women and Children pile into the back of pickup trucks and stand on the sidewalks to splash you as you pass by. No car, motorcycle or fancy dress is safe but they smile and welcome you to Thailand while they bless you with the powder and water.
Over the three days of Songkran I fully participated, acquiring a proper shirt, multiple water guns and colored safety glasses (That didn’t really help like I thought they would). The entire time I carried all of my belongings in ziploc bags to prevent them from getting wet. In fact I packed extra bags for that purpose. You can see some of the Songkran antics in the video below. I can’t express how good it felt to be childlike and ride around splashing people. Even when the water was ICE COLD! Spending the first 7 days of my trip between Bang Na, Bang Pli and Bangkok eating street food was an absolute blast. As an adult I felt like a child and that was priceless.

One Night In Bangkok

First thing we did is hit the bars in Bangkok. It was without a doubt an “all in” introduction to Thailand. The bars are a little different than the bars in the US. The Thais know you are in on vacation so they cater to you. There are a few different places that you will find the Bangkok nightlife, we ended up at Soi Cowboy. It’s not really a street, more of an alley with the most neon lights you have seen outside of Las Vegas. There is an entrance and an exit similar to a theme park where a guard keeps watch of what looks like a Chicago night club at 1:59AM. It’s definitely not a place for cameras but the usual idiots have them out. Snapping pictures that will probably get them busted later. Outside every bar there is a crew of beautiful people asking you to come inside. I would have actually liked to see the look on my face when I first stepped onto that “street”. I know my inner monologue was letting me know that I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
The beer was flowing, the music played and everyone danced. It was a good time ending up at an after hours Karaoke bar that was all Thai. Man, those Thai girls can sing! It was a small place with one pool table and a bunch of helpful Thai gentlemen to work the bar. By the time we left it was was very early morning but we were put safely in a taxi and made our way home.
Be sure to check out my Cup Trick post for more information on getting around bars and clubs in Thailand.

Definitely In Asia

The trip to Thailand was unlike any other. I flew out of LAX via Korean Air on an Airbus similar to the one I took to Amsterdam but it was easy to see that the destination was going to be far different by the looks of the people at the gate. My layover was in Seoul and was only a few hours, just long enough to get some coffee and visit the smoking room. Perfect amount of time. The coffee was expensive at about $5USD for a large Dunkin Donuts.
Both planes that got me to BKK had great service. The crew took good care of all of the oddball requests from the people around me. They played with babies and smiled while working at a fast pace. They even happily changed out my meal when I opted for something I didn’t like.
When I got to Suvarnabhumi airport I was ready to be somewhere. I didn’t stop to exchange money before heading into a Starbucks to get coffee. The barista just looked at me funny when I whipped out my US dollars. I apologized and headed off to get some Baht but before I was about to get back to get coffee I saw my friend coming up the hall. We hugged and chatted our way to the parking lot but the first REAL sign we were in Asia is when I went to get in on the wrong side of the truck. I was expecting to be a passenger on the drivers side since you drive on the left in Thailand. My friend laughed and said he still does it. So begins this adventure.
