Hang Your Hat

My friend and I began chatting about what type of place to stay in. We tossed around the idea of hostels but decided that since we are well into our Thirties and plan on traveling around Europe a bit we should go for a real hotel. While interacting with people is more than welcome we felt having a private bathroom was a requirement. Security also came up in our conversations. We haven’t fully decided on whether to venture out of Amsterdam just yet. Lashawn, my friend, had mentioned taking a train to Paris or London and simply having a safe place in Amsterdam to hold extra clothes etc seemed ideal.
Like everyone I took to my phone to look for hotels in Amsterdam. In fact that is exactly what I googled. The Bilderburg Hotel came up a winner saying 1500 would get us a room in what seemed to be a pretty swanky place from the photos. Lashawn ran the idea of a hotel past Rosemary, our travel agent, to see what she had to say about the Bilderburg knowing that there must be hundreds if not thousands of lodging options in Amsterdam. Rosemary returned with a few different options one that seemed pretty funky called Citizen M. When I say funky I mean ultra modern style with clean lines and interesting objects everywhere you turn. Apparently the shower and toilet have mood lighting as well. Snappy!!
Since Lashawn and I both agreed we would enjoy the ultra hip atmosphere at the Citizen M Hotel I mentioned things like laundry and a couch. Don’t get me wrong I fully intend to do laps around Amsterdam multiple times but 10ish days in a hotel room gets to be a little much. Hotels seem to make me feel like I need to get up and out now …. and I look forward to relaxing with a little coffee or tea. So we scrapped the idea of a hotel and went for the apartment thing. Again my friend chimed in that he was looking at the AirBnB app and that I should too. Then the madness began.

I Am Amsterdam

How #myDamTrip Began

Hey you! Welcome to mydamtrip.com, the only website highlighting my trip to Amsterdam. I know it’s the only one because no one else is writing this. With that I have to tell you the story of how this whole trip began. It wouldn’t be a trip if it didn’t
start out in some kind of vehicle. So I’m driving home from work and a friend that I haven’t talked to in over a year calls me up and asks me to if I would want to go to Amsterdam. I didn’t hesitate to say yes but not realizing that I had just agreed to a trip halfway around the world.
Any normal person would have had a million questions. How do we get there? What dates can I get away? Will I be able to afford it?
None of that or anything else you just thought of mattered. I’m going, that is that! And the conversation was over!
The first step was to get plane tickets.

Getting There

My friend, LaShawn, had a friend, nameless, who uses a travel agent and has had great experiences so I agreed we should go with her. She did a great job of sending us options and alerting us to travel times and how layovers may spoil the trip versus getting a direct flight. This made sense to me because I would much rather spend 20 extra hours vacationing than sitting in an airplane seat. You can only get so drunk. Initially the thought of a travel agent sounded expensive to me. I think there is a common misconception these days that using personal services is more expensive than doing it yourself online. On that I will say that had I gotten a flight that took 20+ hours to save a couple hundred bucks I would have been upset. And that 20+ hours was one way. Not the way to start or end a vacation. All total the plane ticket, taxes and agent fee was about 1200.00 and if you ask me 600 isn’t too much to fly me across the pond in a straight shot. Even though I am in Phoenix and LaShawn is in Chicago Rosemary was able to book our flights together leaving from Chicago to Amsterdam.
Personally I like dealing with a “go to” person and for the amount of work that went into coordinating our flights overseas Rosemary made it easy. She also responded promptly to emailed questions I had after the trip was booked. I appreciate that Rosemary didn’t become a ghost after the sale more than anything. Call her up and book your flight to where ever it is you have been delaying on going. She’s good people.
